I wanted to include this case to illustrate some of the function and cosmetic issues that arise as all of us age. This is a 71 year old gentleman from Pittsburgh who had increasing difficulty breathing through his nose and was concerned that his nose was “growing”. As people age they often perceive that their nose is getting bigger. This is not really the case. What’s actually happening is that the tip of their nose is slowly drooping downwards, which gives the impression that the nose is getting longer. The nose droops as we age, just like any other part of our body!
Left Oblique:
Improved tip position and contour is evident after surgery.
Right Oblique:
This view shows the rejuvenating effect the tip elevation and refinement. The more complete view of the upper lip balances the face.
Left Lateral:
Dramatic elevation in nasal tip after surgery relieves the appearance of the “geriatric” nose. Furthermore, the patient’s ability to breathe through his nose was greatly improved.
Right Lateral:
This lateral view on the post-rhinoplasty pictures shows how the tip was elevated, improving both the appearance and function of the nose. If there is substantial problems with nasal breathing, insurance will typically cover this surgery.
