Botox Vs. Dysport- What is the Difference and Which is More Effective?

This is a very popular question in our practice. The answer is that there is little to no difference in the effectiveness of Botox Cosmetic and Dysport. Both are forms of botulinum toxin A which is a derived protein that relaxes targeted muscles to decrease their movement – and thus to reduce lines and wrinkles on the face. The “units” of Botox and Dysport are not the same, however, this is only relevant to the professional that is injecting the product.

Comparing Botox Cosmetic to Dysport is similar to comparing Crest to Colgate; one product is not better than the other but patients sometimes voice  a preference for a particular. Botox injections are considered the common “brand name” name since it was approved by the FDA in 2002 and was first to market. Dysport was not FDA approved until 2009, but had been used in Europe for many years before that.  Many plastic surgeons feel that Dysport takes effect more quickly than Botox Cosmetic.  Some patients feel the possibility of more rapid onset of action by Dysport is valuable to them, others don’t find this to be a big advantage.  There has been some recent suggestions that Dysport might last somewhat longer than Botox Cosmetic, but these studies are not conclusive.

Botox Cosmetic is made by Allergan (same company that makes Juvederm) and Dysport is made by Galderma (same company that makes Restylane). Both companies have a rewards program that patients can sign up for and receive discount on future treatments. Both products are safe and effective, and although each patient’s preference can vary about which product works best for them, the person that injects you is much more important than the product. We offer both Botox Comsetic and Dysport in all five of our Pittsburgh area offices.
