Botox for Hyperhidrosis
Do you sweat profusely? Prescription antiperspirants, creams, and oral medications not working for you? Learn why many people are turning to botulinum toxin injections to help temporarily block the nerves that cause sweating.
When people think of Botox or Dysport, they typically think of the cosmetic procedure that people undergo to treat fine lines and wrinkles on the face. Little do most people know that Botox and Dysport can help with hyperhidrosis which is the medical condition for excessive sweating. In 2004, the FDA approved Botox to treat hyperhidrosis. It is a very effective treatment most commonly used for the axillae (underarms) but can also be utilized for the soles of the feet as well as for the palms of the hands.
How does it work? The sweat secretions of the eccrine glands are weakened by the botulinum toxin injections which inhibits Acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter, from being released. This chemical stimulates muscle contraction, but also causes sweat glands to produce sweat. The pain level from the injections is relatively mild due to the fact that the underarms are a pretty “fleshy” area. The treatments on average last anywhere from about four to six months, so the longevity of the result is very satisfactory.
